Claire Brooker explores immersive encounters with natural and cultivated landscapes, using printmaking and painting processes to create atmospheric images of flora and vegetation. Her interest is in different ways of seeing—shifting between close observation of interlacing plant forms, broader views of landscape, and the fleeting impressions of garden spaces.
Influenced by photographic methods such as randomised image capture and digital layering, Brooker explores varying degrees of focus, clarity, and movement within an image. Through these approaches, she seeks to evoke the transient nature of memory and experience, capturing moments that feel both familiar and elusive.
Her recent series of watercolour monotypes combine layered colour, intuitive mark-making, and textured surfaces. The process of applying and removing pigment creates subtle variations and unexpected traces, allowing the unique character of each subject to emerge. She is drawn to the balance between control and chance, and to the ways in which the printmaking process can reflect the complexity, vitality, and impermanence of the natural world.
Brooker graduated with distinction from the MFA programme at West Dean College in 2025. She has exhibited at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and has subsequently shown prints and paintings at Copeland Gallery and venues in Sussex.
