Jiayi Wu | A Life Hanging by a Thread

Jiayi Wu is a emerging printmaker and artist-book maker based in Edinburgh. Her practice explores identity, mobility and the fragile balance of everyday life through stone lithography, etching, screen printing and book-based forms. She is interested in how personal experience is shaped by documents, domestic objects, repeated marks and systems of permission. Her submitted works consider two different forms of pressure. In A Life Hanging by a Thread, a suspended basket of fruit and vegetables becomes an image of domestic imbalance. Everyday objects appear as quiet weights, held together by a single thread. The work suggests the repeated and difficult process of searching for balance within ordinary life. In Stamped Identity, a face is fragmented by Schengen visa pages, border stamps, airport names and entry/exit arrows. Locations such as Roissy CDG, Barcelona, Nice Côte d’Azur and Orio al Serio appear as traces of travel, but also as bureaucratic marks of registration, approval and control. The work reflects on the conditional nature of movement: the body may travel, but identity is repeatedly questioned, recorded and authorised. Through tactile printed surfaces, Jiayi Wu uses images to hold and articulate layers of personal, emotional and social tension.
