Artist and researcher Henrietta Simson explores new potentials for the landscape image in a digital context framed by ecological crisis. This means revisiting how landscape and its images have been defined and encountered since the perspectival beginnings of the Renaissance. Visual technologies have profoundly impacted ways of experiencing, seeing and representing the environment. Simson’s work presents an idea of landscape that facilitates a critical questioning of these spatial and aesthetic structures. Data Cloud is an image of a cloud produced from its own metadata, screenprinted onto a 23.5ct gold leaf background. The work explores the strange collision between clouds and computing, between the physical world and the immaterial worlds of language and image-making; how landscape metaphors make technology seem as natural as the weather. It highlights the comparative value placed on the material and the virtual, personal data now being more valuable than gold. Studying at the Slade, she completed an MA in painting in 2007, and a practice-related PhD in 2017. She has received awards from The Arts Council, The Slade, UCL Graduate School, The Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers, and for recent research, UAL (University of the Arts London) and the University of Exeter (EU Horizon). In 2011 she won the Threadneedle Prize for Painting and Sculpture. Her work has been selected for the John Moores Painting Prize, New Contemporaries, Jerwood Drawing Prize and Volta New York.
