Ann Johnston- Schuster | Box 6, Memory of Someone Talking, 2026
Woodcut
Media Dimensions: 12.1 x 17.8 x 5.1 cm
Image Dimensions: 12.1 x 17.8 cm
Unique work
This new series of 50 boxes combines fragments of the artist's master plates to create one-of-a-kind intimate objects. Each box comprises segments of three separate 1/4" Birch veneer relief printing plates. The top, inside, and bottom of the box have different imagery. The sculptural depth adds a visceral expression to the physicality of carving this multiplicity of lines. The printing plates from past relief portraits metamorphose in both form and function. Instead of striking and discarding the 75 master plates, the artist reassembled the shattered pieces into a new design and narrative. Inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, the artist honors the broken pieces of past art. This renewal through repetition is not unlike the belief that the continuous recitation of prayer redeems one.
